San pedro brood stock transportation in Chile

We transported San pedro broodstock from Antofagasta to our hatchery, 300 miles away from Iquique, on Dec. 27, 2007. Antofagasta is capital city of 2nd region and the biggest city at north of Chile http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antofagasta. The city is developing very quickly by expansion of mineral businesses, especially exportation of copper. In fact, the population increased from 297 thousands (2002) to 548 thousands (2006) and it has big shopping mall and hotels.

We left Iquique in the afternoon passing Atacama Desert drive all night. One of my colleague wanted see his mother who lives near Antofagasta and he turned to sub road. The road was wide and asphalted at the beginning then going to gravel and finally sandy road. So, he chose wrong road and the car got stacked in beach around 10 PM. We tried to pull out the car joking at beginning but were silent passed 3 hours. Finally, he requested mother to send somebody to pull out the car.

We arrived Antofagasta University at 3 AM. We filled up water at tank and checked temperature before stoking broodstock. It showed higher than sea water and colleague tasted the water. He found it is fresh water, San pedro can't survive with fresh water of course. Broodstock (16 fishes, biomass 30 Kg more less) were stocked in tank after filling sea water. Two air pumps supplied air which were operated from current source of car cigarette socket and we left 6 AM. We checked fish condition and water contamination every hour during travel.

We stopped at a check point at boundary of 1st region and found out the tank has heavy water leak. The bolt head at bed broke FRP tank bottom due to the heavy weight of tank and bumping of car. We found that the tank will be empty before arriving our hatchery. We were suppose to cover the hole with some putty, but there was no available in that place. There are quarantine office and small kiosks only. Suddenly, an idea came to my mind. I bought something at kiosk. The leakage was minimized by the bubble gum that covered the crack of the tank. All fish reached hatchery with live condition at noon time. That something I bought from kiosk saved big cost and effort of transporting. The trip is unforgettable due to those happenings and we completed our mission.

今週、サンペドロ親魚を約５００Ｋｍ離れたところにあるアントファガスタよりイキケのハッチェリーに搬入しました。アントファガスタは第２州の州都で、チリ北部では最大の都市ですhttp://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%82%A2%E3%83%B3%E3%83%88%E3%83%95%E3%82%A1%E3...。街は近辺に有る鉱山からの鉱物の積出港として栄えており、特に銅価格の沸騰により人口も急増（２００２年３０万人、２００６年５５万人）し、巨大ショッピングモールやホテルがあります。

我々はイキケを午後に出発し、アタカマ砂漠を抜け夜にはアントファガスタ近辺に達しました。ここで同僚の母親に会うため幹線道路を降りましたが、初めは広いアスファルト道路でしたが砂利道に変わり最後は砂になりました。どうも道を間違ったようです。更に悪いことには車が砂にはまってしまい、身動きできなくなりました。月が昇ってから気がついたのですが、我々は辺鄙な砂浜に突っ込んでいました。初めは冗談交じりに車を出そうと悪戦苦闘していたのですが、３時間を経過して無口になってしまいました。結局は母親に親戚を呼んでもらい、彼の車で引っ張り出しました。

やっとの思いでアントファガスタ大学に着いたのが午前３時でした。さっそく荷台のタンクに注水し、念のため水温を計ったところ異常に高い値を示します。不審に思い同僚が水を口に含んだところ、間違って水道水を積んでいた事が判りました。もちろんサンペドロは真水中では生息できません。タンクの水を海水（７００Ｌ）に張替え親魚（１６尾・約３０Ｋｇ）を搬入し、通気装置をセットしました。通気は鑑賞魚用通気ポンプ２台で、車のシガーより電気をとり電気変換して使用しました。午前６時に大学を後にし、運搬中は１時間おきに親魚の様子と水の汚れ具合を確認しました。

車は第１州の州境の検疫所に到着しましたが、ここでＦＲＰタンクが激しい水漏れをしていることを発見しました。どうも荷台のボルトの上にタンクが乗っていたらしく、水の重さと車の振動でボルトがタンクの底を突き破ったようです。このままではハッチェリーに着く前に、タンクが空になってしまいます。本来なら耐水パテで修理するところですが検疫所で売っている訳が無く、他にあるのは小さな売店だけです。ここでアイデアが浮かび、売店である物を購入しました。そうです、よく噛んだ風船ガムをタンク割れ目に詰めることで、水漏れを少なくすることが出来ました。昼には全ての親魚が活きで到着し、安い風船ガムが高価な魚と多大な努力を救ったわけです。こんなにトラブルの多い親魚運搬は初めてでしたが、全ての問題を乗り越えて無事に親魚を運べたという事で、忘れられないものになりました。
