I worked in Malawi as JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency http://www.jica.go.jp/ ) expert in NAC (National Aquaculture Center in Domasi http://project.jica.go.jp/malawi/5241021E1/index.htm) from 2000 to 2004. The jobs were technical transfer of broodstock collection, seed production and juvenile rearing of carp, catfish and tilapia.
We collected broodstock at Shire River inside Liwonde National Park http://www.theplateau.com/malawi/liwonde.htm with fishing permision. The fish were scarce due to over fishing except inside the park where fishing is prohibited. Shire River is 402 Km length starting from the outlet of Lake Malawi passing through the middle of country to Zambia. We had fishing during night time when fish are active.
We worked with park ranger who armed with M1 rifle to protect from poacher and animals. There was atime when a crocodile was tangled by the gill-net and pulled our canoe. Hippos rouse to the surface and intimidated to blow snort when we entered their territory. In fact, I heard hippos turned over to bump the tour boat. Ferther more, malaria by mosquito, sleeping sickness by tsetse fry and bilhartia in the river. Therefore, I decided to drive boat to opertate carefully. On the other hand, I was impressed by the sunset that sunk into the jungle and encountered different kinds of wild animals that tourists can seldom see.
私は２０００年から２００４年にかけて、ＪＩＣＡ（国際協力機構http://www.jica.go.jp/）の専門家としてマラウイのＮＡＣ（National Aquaculture Center in Domasi http://project.jica.go.jp/malawi/5241021E1/home.htm）で働きました。活動内容はコイ・ナマズ・ティラピアの親魚採集・成熟促進・種苗生産・稚魚飼育の技術協力でした。親魚は採捕許可を取得の上、リウォンデ国立公園（ http://www.dososhin.com/dictionary/malawi/ ）の中を流れるシレ河で行われました。というのは一般の川では既に魚が獲り尽くされおり、国立公園内は禁漁となっていたからです。シレ河はマラウイ湖から発し国を縦断してザンビアに抜ける、全長４０２Ｋｍの川です。親魚採集は魚が活発に活動する、夜間に行われました。採集は密漁者や動物から守るため、Ｍ１ライフルを拐帯したパークレンジャーを同行して行われました。実際、刺し網にワニが掛かりカヌーが引き込まれそうになリました。また、船がカバの縄張りに入ったためか、カバが船べりに浮上し鼻息を鳴らして威嚇することもありました。聞いた話では、観光ボートをカバがひっくり返したことがあるようです。更にはマラリア蚊・ツエツエハエ・住血吸虫の問題もありました。従って安全に十分注意をするため、私がボートを操縦することにしました。危険な反面、ジャングルに沈む夕日を見て感動したり、ツアーでは見られないほどの動物を観る事ができました。
